Opened in October 2004, the presidential library is the home of the Illinois State Historical Library's 12 million items, including more than 16,000 linear feet of books, 136,000 reels of microfilm and 12,500 cubic feet of manuscripts, photographs, film and tape. Its collection comprises 46,000 Lincoln-related items locked inside a state-of-the-art fireproof vault.

Opened in April 2005, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum immerses visitors in the life and times of our 16th president. In addition to two special-effects theaters, visitors can walk through two journeys that tell the story of Lincoln's younger years and his presidential life.

The Lincoln Depot — formally known as The Great Western Depot — is where Abraham Lincoln boarded a train for Washington, D.C., to be inaugurated as the 16th president of the United States. Before doing so, he delivered a brief but moving farewell address, which many consider to rank in eloquence with the Gettysburg Address. The Lincoln Depot is owned and maintained by The State Journal-Register and offers several exhibits to give visitors a glimpse into Lincoln's journey to his inauguration.

The Lincoln family pew was used by Abraham, Mary Todd and family when they worshipped in Springfield at First Presbyterian Church. Also be sure to see the seven Louis Comfort Tiffany Windows that grace the sanctuary.

The Lincoln Home, where the Lincoln family lived for 17 years, is amid a scenic and historic neighborhood within downtown Springfield. The National Park Service conducts tours of the home. Tickets for the free tours are available at the nearby Lincoln Home Visitors Center.

The Lincoln family's original account ledger with Springfield Marine and Fire Insurance Company is on display during business hours at Chase Bank at Sixth and Washington streets in downtown Springfield.

The 117-foot monument on the grounds of Oak Ridge Cemetery contains the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, his wife, Mary Todd, and three of their children, Tad, Eddie and Willie. The original receiving vault, where Lincoln's body was buried upon his arrival in Springfield on May 4, 1865, is at the foot of the hill behind the monument. The 114th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry stages a Flag Retreat ceremony at 7 p.m. Tuesdays in June, July and August on the lawn in front of the monument.

Abraham Lincoln practiced law from rented offices on the third floor of this building, located at Sixth and Adams streets, from 1843 to 1852. His law partner during most of that time was William Herndon.

Lincoln's New Salem, located 20 miles northwest of Springfield on Illinois 97, is a reconstruction of the village where Lincoln spent six years of his early adulthood. Visitors can stroll through the village and see interpreters in costume performing in many of the buildings. An orientation film and other information are available in the visitor's center. During the summer, New Salem's outdoor theater is home to several live Theatre in the Park performances.

The Old State Capitol, located at Sixth and Adams streets, was Illinois' center of government from 1839 to 1876. Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous "house divided" speech in the Hall of Representatives. His body lay in state here May 3 and 4, 1865, after his death.
